I know this is a subject that has been beat into the ground, but since this is my blog and I use it mainly to rant and vent my frustrations I will gladly beat it some more. Ignorant PC users that are prejudiced against anything apple.
Let me inform you on how I got started on this rant…
I was speaking to the system administrator of a client about a personal purchase for my mother. We were talking about printers and he told me about the quality of his new printer that I earlier inquired about. I told him that it no longer mattered as my mother was getting a free printer with her new computer. He inquired, “A new Dell?”. I said, “No, an Apple of course”. He scrunched up his face and made a “aarrgh” sound as if somehow my mother using an apple would take money out of his pocket. I played it off and just stated the common statement, “Recommend Apple for your friends and family, and PC’s for people you charge by the hour”. He then became even more close minded and stated very matter of factly, “that’s why 99% of the world uses something else”.
Let’s see how this is relevant. If the majority is always in the right (the only argument he could provide on why apple’s are so bad) then we can assume (ass - u - me) other things in life as well. Like how most people fall on the left hand side of the IQ curve, or how a majority of the public could not perform in professional sports. Does this make them better? Almost everyone that came to existence is now dead. Can we deduce that being dead is better than being alive? Only if millions of dollars were spent on marketing propaganda to make us believe so!
Why is this the normal thought for a PC user. Even in my own office where two out of three developers have macs. Apples are still considered taboo. Every reason they [PC users] provide why Apples are bad computers are false or unproven claims. The claims are usually very general, like “you can’t run a business on those” or “they’re only good for graphics”.
In my own office, every problem that comes through the network is first blamed on the two apple computers. Lets forget about the fact that the apples have not had any major problems aside from a faulty usb port on the first refurb. Even Windows viruses are blamed on the mac. Somehow we are spreading the Windows viruses around the network. Our Windows administrator even went so far as to blame ssh on a network problem he was having on his windows server and another time blamed a windows networking problem he was having with his laptop on an old iMac that wasn’t even plugged in to the network.
In my experience I have found that most people who bash or belittle apple products are usually people who a.) can’t afford them, therefore deem them bad or b.) have never used them, and are brainwashed by M$ propaganda. Most everyone else who is not an “apple zealot” usually respects it but prefers another OS for some reason or another (Usually a linux or UNIX system).
Another thing I’ve noticed is how Windows zealots usually curse the windows operating system when in good company (other windows L-users), but defend it so to anyone else. Much like most Americans do with their country. People don’t do this with other things in life. Take the over used analogy of cars for example: If I buy a KIA and during my ownership of it I find that it drives like shit, is cheaply made, and breaks down all the time. I don’t go around telling anyone who doesn’t own a KIA that it is a fantastic car (unless I’m selling them mine), and I certainly don’t go buy another one. Yes I understand that to get into another operating system you must re-learn certain things, like where to find your applications, where certain settings are and the like. This is no different than getting a new car. You must re-learn where the new controls are: lights, windshield wipers, the clutch is different, the brakes and acceleration is certainly different, etc…
So why is it so hard to accept a different platform?
