I picked up an iPhone the other day. I’ve had this thing for two days and I’m taking to it like a fish to water. Really, in the first 90 seconds I took to it. It’s pretty much the reason I plunked down 600 clams for a phone.
It really is so much more than a phone. It really is so much more than other “smart” devices. I’ve had my share of pocket pc’s, palms, and smart phones over the years. I cursed most of them because though the concept was good in theory, they just took too much time to use. The same reason I cursed every phone I had except nokia’s from years ago. Sorry Motorola, your interface has always been non-responsive and kludgy.
I’m not sure what makes the iPhone so great and easy to use. Besides the genius UI men at apple, I’m pretty sure it’s the whole multi-touch and it’s implementation. It’s so natural, so easy to get accustomed to.
I was looking at pictures in iPhoto on my laptop after two days of using the iPhone. I wanted to zoom in a little. I reached off the track pad to the screen and began to reverse pinch, only to find myself laughing at my retardedness. That’s how quickly it sets in. It just feels right. The way you handle objects on the iPhone. The way you interact. The responsiveness, and re-actions from the interface, like the springy everything. The subtle highlights of button presses. It all adds up to a UI experience that is where the industry is going. Or at least where it should be.
What’s next after the whole multi-touch? I say after multi-touch catches on and becomes mainstream, the screen manufacturers will have a moldable screen that you can dig your fingers into. Giving you the impression that you are actually holding something, not just dragging against a flat surface.
